Mise-en-scene: Lighting & Connotations
Low-key lighting is used on Beyonce's character when she is seen from the perspective of the man she is cheating on. This is done to make her seem shady and portray her as the bad character.
By using low-key lighting here, Beyonce's face is half covered with shadows, to create atmosphere and ambience.
The lighting could suggest to the audience that Beyonce is villainous.
In this part of the video Beyonce is vulnerable and emotional.
Here the lighting style has changed from dark to light (low-key to highkey).
This costume is used to present her views on feminism and how males dominate deemed "masculine" jobs (Ex. policeman). She reverses this role to set the tone if the video. She has a male co-worker, so this suggests that the roles have been changed. This theme is, in my opinion, badly executed- as she is supposed to be empowering women and presenting women as equal to men, however her shirt is unbuttoned, revealing her chest, thus sexualising and objectifying women once again.
The music videos for Bruno Mars' Uptown Funk and Beyonce If I Were A Boy have a very contrasting use of lighting and colour. For example Uptown Funk has a lot of varying colours, mainly dull, retro reds and browns. Whereas, in If I were a Boy, the whole video uses a monochrome colour scheme to connote feeling and vulnerability. Uses of varying lighting choices connote contrasting emotions in each video. For example, in If I were a boy- low-key lighting is used throughout to connote her emotions, and how she views society. However, in Uptown Funk- high-key lighting is used to connote playfulness and happiness.
