Comparing music magazine covers

Compare and Contrast Magazine covers. There are many clear differences between the The Source and Top of the Pops magazine, in terms of their use of genre conventions and media language. The Top of the Pops magazine uses many shades of pinks and purples because this will attract the primary target audience (young teenage girls), whereas The Source magazine is using a monochrome colour pallet with splashes of warm reds and yellows to attract their target audience (Older teen-Young Adult males). The masthead of each magazine drastically contrasts, as The Source uses a masculine, monochrome, industrial font (stereotypical for 'manly' men) whilst, however, The Top of the Pops masthead is curly, pink and glittery which stereotypically attracts the eye of the young female audience. Mojo Magazine Case Study Mojo has used a range of genre conventions to attract their target audience. The use of a monochrome colour scheme and a low angle medium close up shot of the band as a main image with a reflection of the band from years prior. This would appeal to the primary target audience because it gives a nostalgic and retro feel. The primary target audience are music lovers above 30, who watched the band growing up many years ago. This magazine is very effective in attracting that audience, as they have followed the conventions that the target audience may be subconsciously attracted to (retro, bold, nostalgic) and feel more compelled to buy. The masthead is unconventional from other magazine covers, as it does not jump out to the audience with bold colours, and is obscured by a band member's head, which is unusual because it may distract the audience from the name of the magazine.  This  particular magazine cover displays some clear differences from...

MOJO Magazine uses genre conventions to appeal to a specific target audience. In the masthead, there are block capitals with a masculine colour palette (white and grey). This simple colour palette attracts an older audience, because monochrome has a retro appeal. The masthead is unconventional from other magazine covers, as it does not jump out to the audience with bold colours, and is obscured by a band member's head, which is unusual because it may distract the audience from the masthead.

Bassist John McVie completed the lineup for their self-titled debut album. Danny Kirwan joined as a third guitarist in 1968. These magazines have used these colour pallets (Black, white, red) to appeal to a teenage audience as it pops and attracts attention. When the Lilly Allen magazine was produced, (around 2010) the "emo" look was very popular with the stark contrast of colours that they would wear, the picture was specifically taken and edited to make her skin seem even lighter, creating an even higher contrast between her skin and hair. This colour choice shows that NME are trying to appeal to teenagers at the time. In the Brendon Urie magazine, produced by Kerrang!,  they have also used a black, white and red colour theme to attract a teenage to young adult audience.
